Leica Q3 43 gets a special Formula 1 edition
Leica and Formula 1 have released a limited-edition version of the Q3 43 camera. It combines recognizable motorsport design elements with the technical platform of the Leica Q3 43, a popular model in the Q series.

The body accessories and finish details are inspired by the construction of race cars. The package includes a grip with a carbon-fiber shell and wireless charging support. It is complemented by a matching thumb rest and a soft-release shutter button; the button features a carbon-fiber insert and a red ring.

Carbon fiber is familiar to motorsport fans for its use in racing machinery. Formula 1 engineers use this lightweight yet rigid material to build the fastest prototypes. Leica does not typically use carbon fiber in its cameras, but it features prominently in this edition. All carbon-fiber components for the Q3 43 Formula 1 were made and tested in Germany.
The F1 logo appears on the camera’s top plate and lens cap. The body has a non-slip Microvelour coating with a texture reminiscent of a racing steering wheel. The package also includes a cord strap that matches the carbon-fiber details and bears the logos of both brands.

Leica says that developing the camera can be compared to a Formula 1 team preparing for a season: success depends not on a single detail, but on the seamless interaction of components and people. The company notes that racing technology operates under extreme demands, while the camera’s optics, sensor, design and mechanics work together so that nothing distracts the photographer from the subject.

The placement of the carbon-fiber details was also chosen with practical use in mind. They are positioned at key points photographers grip when shooting and operating the camera. This makes the connection to motorsport more than just visual: the material’s texture can be felt with every shot. Leica emphasizes that changing light reveals the carbon-fiber texture and creates visual depth on the surface. The even finish, the company says, underscores the cohesive execution—from the grip to the thumb rest and shutter button.
The red details are also inspired by Formula 1. On racing steering wheels, buttons are often color-coded so drivers can quickly find the right control. On the camera, this treatment is used for the shutter button and one of the two function buttons on the thumb rest.

Q3 43 optics and features
The special edition is based on the Leica Q3 43, which features an APO-Summicron 43 mm f/2 ASPH. lens. Its angle of view is close to the way the human eye perceives the world around it.

The camera features a full-frame BSI CMOS sensor, with a choice of 60, 36 or 18 megapixels. It also offers a fast hybrid autofocus system and advanced video capabilities.

A dedicated Formula 1 image profile has been created for the model. It adjusts the image to capture the atmosphere of motorsport, boosting contrast and enriching colors to convey the character of the track and paddock. The profile is available through the Leica Fotos app and can be applied while shooting. Its effect is visible in the viewfinder, not just after the image is processed.
Launch and sales
The Leica Q3 43 Formula 1 made its debut at a private event at the Leica Store and Leica Gallery in Los Angeles. Formula 1 presenter Ariana Bravo and Jenson Button, the 2009 FIA Formula 1 World Drivers’ Champion, told guests about the collaboration.

The event also featured a series of 26 motorsport photographs by Italian photographer Kallo Albanese, who specializes in Formula 1 and racing photography.
The camera will go on sale on October 21 at Leica stores, on the company’s website and through specialist retailers. The suggested retail price is $9,950, £7,300 or €8,500.
