The Celebes crested macaques (Macaca nigra) are nearing extinction, with their population having plummeted by over 75% in just the last 30 years. Today, they are among the world’s 25 most endangered primates and could vanish entirely by 2050 if no meaningful action is taken. These striking animals face relentless threats from habitat destruction and poaching for bushmeat, driven by a lack of public awareness and weak law enforcement.
I spent time with these incredible creatures — full of expression, curiosity, and playfulness — and was deeply moved by them. Knowing they may disappear within our lifetime is heartbreaking. We still have a chance to protect them, but the window is closing fast.
