- The top of the subject on an intersection of the thirds; the eyes or head — on the upper third line.
- Space and horizon 20
- Room ahead of a moving or looking subject. In landscapes and night scenes — the horizon on a third.

- The subject is neither lost in the frame nor squeezed by it. Landscapes like a wide view.
- Nothing cut off 20
- The frame edge does not cut the subject, and in macro — the flower. A waist-up portrait may be cut below.
