ARRI Film Lab 1.5 boosts film effects and speeds up rendering

ARRI Film Lab 1.5 adds 8, 16 and 65 mm film formats, new grain and halation controls, ACES support and faster rendering.

The update adds 8, 16 and 65 mm formats, controls for grain, detail and anamorphic effects, as well as support for ACES 2.0. Processing is up to four times faster; the new version is available free to existing users.

Film Lab 1.5 expands the range of analog effects for digital video

ARRI has released version 1.5 of its Film Lab plugin, an OpenFX tool for professional editing and color grading. The product was announced on November 11, 2025; the update expands the options for simulating a film look in digital video. ARRI describes it as a major update for creators seeking an analog image character.

New formats and texture controls

In the first version of Film Lab, visual styles were based on 35 mm film, corresponding to the full-frame format. You can now also choose 8 mm, 16 mm or 65 mm as the source format.

The new formats come with two controls. Grain Size sets the scale of the film grain, while Rendition of Detail affects the perceived sharpness of the image. Together, they let you fine-tune the texture and level of detail.

Anamorphic lens and halation controls

Film Lab 1.5 adds an Anamorphic Ratio control with eight squeeze factors ranging from 1.25x to 2x. It adjusts the horizontal stretching of the film grain and simulated halation, helping match the effect to footage shot with anamorphic lenses that have different characteristics.

The Halation Spread control adjusts the radius and character of the glow around highlights and high-contrast edges. ARRI has also doubled the maximum values for Grain Intensity and Halation Intensity. According to the company, users had asked for a stronger analog effect after Film Lab launched in late 2025.

Performance and integration into color workflows

Processing in Film Lab 1.5 can be up to four times faster. ARRI promises smoother rendering and real-time 4K video playback on more devices. The company also notes improved responsiveness on Macs with Apple Silicon processors.

The update also expands compatibility with color-managed post-production workflows. ACES 2.0 ACEScc and ACEScct input and output options have been added, including for use in DaVinci Resolve and Baselight.

Film Lab 1.5 is free for existing users. New users can purchase the plugin through RE:Vision Effects: a subscription costs around $25 per month, while a perpetual license costs just under $500. Image credit: ARRI.
