Nikon Business Card Holder Inspired by the F3

Nikon has released a leather business card holder that brings together Japanese business culture and the company’s imaging history. The accessory references the Nikon F3 film SLR camera and is designed to hold business cards.

Materials, Finish, and Design

The Nikon Leather Business Card Holder, Black x Red is made from Japanese cowhide. Its texture resembles the covering used on Nikon cameras. A vertical red line, applied with foil stamping, runs down the exterior—a detail echoing a distinctive design element of the F3. The Nikon name is stamped on the inside.

The card holders are handcrafted by experienced artisans in Tokyo. The company notes that the leather will age and develop a patina over time. There are two compartments inside: one for your own cards to give to others, and the other for business cards you receive.

The Importance of Business Cards in Japan

In Japanese corporate culture, a business card is more than just a piece of paper with contact information. The exchange follows established etiquette, and how a recipient handles a card shows respect for the person who gave it to them. There are rules not only for exchanging business cards but also for storing them afterward.

It is considered improper to put a card straight into a pocket, bend it, or otherwise damage it. That is why a quality business card holder is considered an essential accessory for business meetings.

Nikon’s Positioning and Availability

Nikon describes the new model as a practical accessory for formal occasions that also reflects the character of the company’s cameras. According to the manufacturer, the card holder can be used for many years—like a favorite camera.

The accessory is available for preorder from Nikon Direct Japan. The company plans to begin shipping orders on November 2. You can see the card holder in person at Nikon Plaza Tokyo.

Nikon Direct Japan offers a wide range of branded products, though this selection is largely unavailable to photographers in the United States. Examples include business cards with an eggshell texture and Romalian typeface, like those in the famous business card scene; they also feature a watermark. The Nikon card holder can be used to store cards like these.
