Instax Square 2: Rounded Design and New Filters

Fujifilm Instax Square 2: rounded design, focus modes, and new color filters. The camera will launch alongside Instax Square Soft Haze film.

Fujifilm has introduced the Instax Square 2, with a rounded body, warm and cool color modes, and automatic exposure. The camera will be joined by Soft Haze film, which produces softer, lower-contrast photos.

Fujifilm Instax Square 2 gets a rounded body and new color filters

Fujifilm has introduced the Instax Square 2, a new camera in the Instax Square instant photography family. The model retains the line’s recognizable design but has more rounded contours and features not previously available on Square cameras.

The camera body is made of plastic and features raised vertical grooves on the grip. The same pattern surrounds the large lens. Fujifilm describes the updated look as minimalist and sculptural. Compared with the Instax Square SQ1, released in 2020, the Square 2 retains the overall character of its predecessor but looks less angular: instead of a strictly boxy shape, it has a more rounded silhouette.

The camera weighs 450 g, just under a pound, without batteries or a film pack. Its dimensions are 139 × 119.5 × 71 mm, or 5.5 × 4.7 × 2.8 inches. It takes four AA batteries. According to Fujifilm, one set should be enough to shoot 30 Instax Square packs, each containing 10 frames.

Lens and shooting modes

The lens consists of two elements, has a focal length of 66.75 mm and an aperture of f/12.6. Given the Instax Square film image size of 62 × 62 mm, its angle of view is roughly equivalent to that of a 32 mm lens on a full-frame camera.

The viewfinder uses a reverse Galilean optical system, offers 0.4× magnification, and has a central aiming mark. A built-in mirror is provided for self-portraits, while a xenon flash provides illumination.

The lens has three focus modes: standard, close-up, and landscape. The focusing range starts at 0.3 m (0.98 ft) and extends to infinity. The camera also supports automatic exposure and auto flash mode. Shooting modes are selected with rotary controls.

Filters and color options

The main new image-processing feature is the Mood Filter switch. It lets you change the overall color rendition, tonality, and mood of a photo. Two options are available: Cool, with a cooler look, and Warm, with a warmer appearance. If you don’t want any extra styling, you can keep the classic Instax look.

The Instax Square 2 will be available in three colors: Slate Blue, Misty White, and Brick Red. The camera will cost $119.95 in the US and C$139.99 in Canada. Fujifilm plans to begin shipping in late October.

Bing Liem, president of the Imaging Division at Fujifilm North America Corporation, noted that Instax Square cameras and products appeal to instant photography enthusiasts with their classic style and symmetrical image format. He said customers had long been waiting for another Square camera that was neither too large nor too small. Liem explained that the Square 2 is intended to meet this demand with a new design and features not previously found in the lineup.

New Instax Square Soft Haze film

Alongside the camera, Fujifilm announced Instax Square Soft Haze film. It reduces saturation and contrast, producing a softer image with diffused, glowing highlights.

A 10-frame pack will cost $18.99 in the US and C$16.99 in Canada. In this case, the usual price relationship between the two markets is reversed.
